Transit

The passage of a smaller body in front of a larger one — a Mercury or Venus transit across the Sun, or a planet across its host star.

Historically used to measure the astronomical unit (Venus transits of 1761 and 1769) and now to detect exoplanets by the tiny dips they cause in stellar brightness.
