About Dmitry Shteynbuk
Miami-based astronomy educator publishing plain-language, visually structured guides to the night sky — from naked-eye stargazing to telescopes, stellar physics, and the history of how we learned where we are.
Dmitry has been observing the night sky since childhood and formalized that interest into a teaching practice over the last decade. The Night Sky, Explained is his attempt to write the astronomy resource he wishes he'd had when he first picked up a pair of binoculars: visual, quantitative where it matters, unpretentious, and honest about what an amateur can actually see.
The approach
Every article on this site aims to explain one thing about the sky clearly, with real numbers — magnitudes, angular sizes, focal ratios, distances in parsecs — and inline diagrams drawn from actual catalog data rather than decorative stock art. Nothing here is scraped, spun, or written to hit a keyword target. Each hub builds on the ones before it: start with the celestial sphere and constellations, move through the solar system and stars, and by the time you reach deep-sky observing and telescope selection, the vocabulary is already in place.
The site is deliberately not a news feed and never covers astrology. It's an editorial knowledge hub — a slow, layered library rather than a stream.
Other knowledge hubs
The Night Sky, Explained applies the same editorial approach — long-form, visual, plain-language — that Dmitry uses on his sailing, aviation, and cocktail knowledge hubs. Each is a standalone reference site built around one subject.
- Dmitry Shteyn — Sailing →Long-form sailing knowledge hub — navigation, weather, seamanship, and the same plain-language teaching style.https://dmitryshteynsailing.com
- Dmitry Shteyn — Aviation →General aviation, meteorology, and the physics of flight, structured the same way as this site.https://dmitryshteynaviation.com
- Dmitry Shteyn — Cocktails →The chemistry, history, and technique of classic drink-making — the same editorial approach applied to a very different subject.https://dmitryshteyncocktails.com
A note on names
Dmitry Shteynbuk also publishes under the spellings Dmitriy Shteynbuk and Dmitry Shteyn. These are the same person — the variants reflect different transliterations of the Cyrillic surname and, in the case of "Dmitry Shteyn", a shorter form used on the sister sites' author pages. All three spellings refer to the same author, based in Miami, Florida.
