Supernova

The explosive death of a massive star or a runaway white dwarf.

Two main kinds: Type II (core-collapse of a star above ~8 solar masses) and Type Ia (thermonuclear detonation of a white dwarf). A single supernova can briefly outshine its entire host galaxy. Type Ia's uniform peak brightness makes them cosmic standard candles.
