Retrograde motion

The apparent westward motion of a planet against the background stars, opposite to its usual eastward drift.

A geometric effect: Earth, on a faster inner orbit, laps outer planets near opposition. Explaining retrograde motion without a moving Earth required the epicycles of Ptolemy; Copernicus dispensed with them by putting the Sun at the center.
