A gravitationally bound system of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter — from ten million to a trillion stars.
The Milky Way is a barred spiral. Galaxies come in spiral, elliptical, and irregular forms and cluster into groups; the Local Group contains the Milky Way, Andromeda (M31), and about 80 smaller companions.
