Collimation

The precise alignment of a telescope's optical elements.

Newtonian reflectors need periodic collimation of primary and secondary mirrors; refractors and Schmidt-Cassegrains hold alignment much longer. A miscollimated scope shows distorted star images even in perfect seeing.
